Don't feel bad, Beth. I confess, my own knowledge of Turkish history is only because my dad is a Middle Eastern history fanatic (obviously with a lot of emphasis on Iran) and I've definitely picked up more from listening to him than I have from reading on my own. Also, when I was in 8th/9th grade, it became the rage for girls my age to read romantic novels written about the Ottoman Empire (what can I say, our reading habits were weird--that particular fad was then followed up by reading any novels dealing with the reigns of Louis XIII-XV).

An interesting exercise in comparison is looking up the biographies of both Ataturk and Reza Pahlavi, who were contemporaries, and seeing how each went about modernizing and unifying their respective neighbouring countries.

Wow. Just wow.

(And here I admit my massive cultural ignorance: I have heard of these people and places pretty much only because I read Birds Without Wings and The Historian.)

Great info and links on the Ayasofya. You've not even gotten to the bulk of your trip and already the write-up is making me homesick. I really wish you could have stopped in Iran; if and when you do, some day, hopefully you'll give me enough heads up so I can do a massive write-up of all the places you have to see and stay...and offer up my own cousins as your guides!

Many thanks. It was a wonderful trip, and the pictures can't begin to capture it. I just hope it's interesting to others, here. Some of my best travel info comes from random personal websites, so I post these as a means of (hopefully) contributing to the pool of info.
