{"id":1101,"date":"2008-08-08T18:54:22","date_gmt":"2008-08-08T22:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2008-08-08T18:58:18","modified_gmt":"2008-08-08T22:58:18","slug":"the-olympics-make-it-what-you-want-it-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2008\/08\/08\/the-olympics-make-it-what-you-want-it-to-be\/","title":{"rendered":"The Olympics: Make It What You Want It To Be"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Objectively, the Olympics are a scam.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a conspiracy between global corporations interested in advertising, local governments looking for an excuse to shovel public money to favored private contractors, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skeksis\">Skekis<\/a> (also known as the International Olympic Committee) who suck the lifeblood out of young men and women.\u00c2\u00a0 If this were the last Olympics ever, it would probably be a net good for the world.<\/p>\n<p>But it won&#8217;t be.\u00c2\u00a0 So make of it what you will.\u00c2\u00a0 Living in the center of the &#8217;96 Olympics was among the most amazing experiences I&#8217;ve ever had.\u00c2\u00a0 The people, the energy, the &#8211; forgive me, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wesjones.com\/eoh.htm\">Francis<\/a> &#8211; <em>post-history<\/em> feeling to all of it (it was 1996, after all).\u00c2\u00a0 Not even some wingnut with a bomb could ruin it for us.\u00c2\u00a0 After the experience of those couple of weeks, I will always be up for hanging out in an Olympic city.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s more than a party, though.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s &#8211; despite NBC&#8217;s best efforts to ensure I never care about someone&#8217;s triumphantly-overcoming-tragedy again &#8211; the story of thousands of people who have busted their ass for most of their lives to be there.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s the amazing people it produces, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/sport\/2008\/jun\/29\/olympicgames?gusrc=rss&amp;feed=sport\">Otto Peltzer<\/a> (follow and read that).\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s people.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, it&#8217;s among the very few events where we can truly say that &#8220;the world is watching.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 And that, my friends, leads to profound and important actions like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/c\/c8\/Carlos-Smith.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Olympics can still be shaped by individuals.\u00c2\u00a0 All of the people in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bigpicture\/2008\/08\/2008_olympics_opening_ceremony.html\">these<\/a> (<strong>amazing<\/strong>) Opening Ceremonies pictures?\u00c2\u00a0 They are individuals, like you and me, who worked incredibly hard to be there.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t cede the good of the Olympics to spite the bad.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>If you want to watch the Olympics online, and live in the United States, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/\">NBCOlympics.com<\/a> is probably the place for you.\u00c2\u00a0 I say &#8220;probably&#8221;, because 1) while it will show most events live, it will delay online access for any event it plans to broadcast until *after* its been broadcast, and 2) there&#8217;s some ridiculous deal by which access is only available to those US viewers living in areas served by NBC&#8217;s &#8220;partners&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 They check this by asking for a zipcode (I have a friend who lives in 22203, and it works perfectly).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re getting screwed by the inability of the IOC and world broadcasters to find a way to make the Olympics accesible to you, you might be interested in <a href=\"http:\/\/newteevee.com\/2008\/08\/05\/pirate-olympics-5-alternative-ways-to-watch-the-olympic-games-online\/\">this article<\/a> on the &#8220;alternative&#8221;
