{"id":1197,"date":"2008-09-01T11:39:40","date_gmt":"2008-09-01T15:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=1197"},"modified":"2008-09-01T11:39:40","modified_gmt":"2008-09-01T15:39:40","slug":"refusal-to-deal-with-reality-a-core-republican-value","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2008\/09\/01\/refusal-to-deal-with-reality-a-core-republican-value\/","title":{"rendered":"Refusal to Deal with Reality: A Core Republican Value?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been watching the discussion over Sarah Palin with something approaching astonishment.\u00c2\u00a0 Not just astonishment at McCain&#8217;s poor judgment in selecting her, but the extent to which Republicans have had to all but completely abandon the concepts of honesty, integrity, and consistency to do so.\u00c2\u00a0 And they just did it on a dime (albeit after a bit of shocked stuttering on Friday morning).\u00c2\u00a0 Overnight, the one issue they had continually slammed Obama over &#8211; experience &#8211; suddenly became irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans made this shift despite the reams of papers, hours of footage, and terabytes of storage showing them going on about what a core qualification it was.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, I know that comfort with hypocrisy is a very important part of being a Republican, but this goes far beyond that.\u00c2\u00a0 So far, in fact, that it seems McCain has circled all the way around into a realm completely beyond hypocrisy and more into . . . an alternate reality?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When asked about criticisms of Sarah Palin&#8217;s readiness to serve as president, McCain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/08\/31\/AR2008083100403_2.html?hpid=topnews&amp;sid=ST2008083100501&amp;s_pos=\">responded<\/a>: &#8220;If they want to go down that route, in all candor, <em>she has far, far more experience than Senator Obama does<\/em>.&#8221; (emphasis supplied)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What.the.hell?\u00c2\u00a0 Josh Marshall <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/211954.php\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Set aside the bravado. Can McCain possibly believe that? And if he does, what are we supposed to think of his own fitness to serve? Sen. Obama is certainly new on the national scene. But he&#8217;s serving his fourth year in the US senate. He&#8217;s run a successful national primary campaign. He&#8217;s deeply versed on all the relevant policy issues. Palin has been the governor of one of the smallest states in the country (by pop.) for 18 months. As recently as 2006, she said she <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com\/the_daily_dish\/2008\/08\/palin-on-iraq.html\">hadn&#8217;t focused enough<\/a> on Iraq to have an opinion one way or another about the surge.  Even now, her off-hand comments about Iraq are <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/211762.php\">completely at odds<\/a> with Sen.
