{"id":1510,"date":"2008-10-17T08:23:32","date_gmt":"2008-10-17T12:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=1510"},"modified":"2008-10-17T08:23:32","modified_gmt":"2008-10-17T12:23:32","slug":"the-security-theatre-chronicles-part-374","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2008\/10\/17\/the-security-theatre-chronicles-part-374\/","title":{"rendered":"The Security Theatre Chronicles, Part 374"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeffery Goldberg has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/200811\/airport-security\">spent the past couple of years<\/a> demonstrating (for himself, apparently) what an utter joke the TSA&#8217;s system has become.\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;m not just talking about simple little things &#8211; like the small blade I usually carry, or the fact that I&#8217;ve decided to just leave the liquids in my bag &#8211; but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/200811\/airport-security\">things that would make even me think there might be an actual threat<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During one secondary inspection, at O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Hare International Airport in Chicago, I was wearing under my shirt a spectacular, only-in-America device called a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Beerbelly,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a neoprene sling that holds a polyurethane bladder and drinking tube. The Beerbelly, designed originally to sneak alcohol\u00e2\u20ac\u201dup to 80 ounces\u00e2\u20ac\u201dinto football games, can quite obviously be used to sneak up to 80 ounces of liquid through airport security. (The company that manufactures the Beerbelly also makes something called a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Winerack,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a bra that holds up to 25 ounces of booze and is recommended, according to the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Web site, for PTA meetings.) My Beerbelly, which fit comfortably over my beer belly, contained two cans\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 worth of Bud Light at the time of the inspection. It went undetected.
