{"id":1722,"date":"2008-11-07T14:08:18","date_gmt":"2008-11-07T18:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=1722"},"modified":"2008-11-07T14:36:10","modified_gmt":"2008-11-07T18:36:10","slug":"friday-notes-still-sinking-in-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2008\/11\/07\/friday-notes-still-sinking-in-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Notes: Still Sinking In Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday was for finally getting some sleep.\u00c2\u00a0 Thursday was for tracking down all the things I&#8217;ve left undone of late.\u00c2\u00a0 And today is for actually getting them done (or getting started on that, anyway).\u00c2\u00a0 So things have been a little light.\u00c2\u00a0 If you want to see a lot of what I *would* have been writing about, if I&#8217;d have been more adept at multi-tasking, check out my friend Karen&#8217;s posts <a href=\"http:\/\/users.livejournal.com\/_stranger_here\/\">from the past few days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2008\/11\/05\/a-photograph-of-amer.html\">this photo<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Everybody wins.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>With the defeat of Carol Schwartz, the DC city council is now a Republican-Free Zone.\u00c2\u00a0 Good job screwing yourselves with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickmara.com\/\">Patrick Mara<\/a>, guys.\u00c2\u00a0 And it wasn&#8217;t just the GOP that got screwed here &#8211; it was DC.\u00c2\u00a0 Schwartz was a positive influence on the council, and now she&#8217;s gone.<br \/>\n~<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.gwhatchet.com\/index.php?id=1093\">Good video report<\/a> of the Obamalleycat I was involved with last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Maryland_Question_2_(2008)_Summary\">Question 2<\/a> passed in Maryland, adding slot machines to specific locations around the state.\u00c2\u00a0 The state will now be balancing (well, attempting to) its budget on the backs of its poorest citizens.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m theoretically in favor of legalized gambling, but the practical impact in the communities in which it is concentrated is stomach-turning.\u00c2\u00a0 Good luck, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Atrios pointed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/11\/06\/AR2008110603948.html?sid=ST2008110604101&amp;s_pos=\">this WaPo story<\/a> about a black couple that worked in the White House over three decades, starting in the Truman Administration.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just a personal interest piece, but a good review of history.\u00c2\u00a0 And, as Atrios asks, stick with it until the end.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Vegan Soul Power <a href=\"http:\/\/vegansoulpower.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/guest-blog-dispatch-from-obama-campaign.html\">has an interesting guest post<\/a> about eating on the road with the Obama campaign.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Marijuana-friendly ballot iniatives across the country <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpp.org\/library\/2008-ballot-initiatives.html\">nearly run the board<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Krugman spoke the truth, <a href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/11\/05\/the-monster-years\/\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution.
