{"id":2132,"date":"2008-12-30T18:56:39","date_gmt":"2008-12-30T22:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=2132"},"modified":"2008-12-30T18:57:18","modified_gmt":"2008-12-30T22:57:18","slug":"dc-bike-rack-design-competition-this-means-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2008\/12\/30\/dc-bike-rack-design-competition-this-means-you\/","title":{"rendered":"DC Bike Rack Design Competition (This Means You!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m lifting this wholesale from a DC-related listserv that I&#8217;m on, and posting it with the admonition that you &#8211; yes, <strong>you<\/strong> &#8211; consider having a go at it.\u00c2\u00a0 Bike racks aren&#8217;t complicated, and we might all benefit from a new perspective.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Plus, $1500 and a night at the Mayflower?\u00c2\u00a0 That could be fun (just ask Elliot Spitzer).\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the Call for Entries:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Call for Entries<br \/>\nCreative Bicycle Rack Design<br \/>\nDeadline: Friday, February 9th at 5:00 p.m.<br \/>\nHonorarium:\u00c2\u00a0 $1,500<\/p>\n<p>Project<br \/>\nThe Golden Triangle Business Improvement District is requesting drawn design entries for creative and unique bicycle racks.\u00c2\u00a0 The racks will be installed within the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District<br \/>\nin Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>The call is open to the entire art community including visual artists, architects, graphic designers, urban designers and bicycling enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>The winning entries will receive a $1500 honorarium plus a complimentary Saturday night stay for two at the luxurious Mayflower Hotel, 1127 Connecticut Avenue NW, in the heart of the Golden Triangle.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nBackground<br \/>\nThe Golden Triangle encompasses 42 blocks of Washington, DC&#8217;s central business district directly south of Dupont Circle and bounded approximately by Pennsylvania Ave, New Hampshire Ave, Massachusetts<br \/>\nAve and 16th Street NW. The Golden Triangle is a bustling cosmopolitan commercial area with 75,000 professionals and over 800 retailers and restaurants. The Golden Triangle BID works to keep the area an<br \/>\nexceptional place that is clean and friendly, inviting and accessible.\u00c2\u00a0 For more information about the BID visit www.goldentriangledc.com.<\/p>\n<p>Design Guidelines<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2The main body of the rack must be designed to be fabricated from steel tubing<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Accommodate at least 2 bicycles upright by its frame<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Enable the frame and one of the wheels to be secured using a standard u-lock<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Provide locking points that are between 1&#8242; and 3&#8242; off the ground<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Provide locking points with a thickness of 1&#8243; minimum and 4&#8243; maximum<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Include no sharp edges or other potential safety hazards<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2A gap near the bottom for pedal clearance<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2A base that can accept at least two 3\/8&#8243; x 3&#8243; wedge anchors for surface mounting<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Reflect or complement the character of the area<\/p>\n<p>Fabrication<br \/>\nThe Golden Triangle BID will be responsible for fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>Selection Process<br \/>\nThe selection panel will include representatives of the community, art professionals and members of the Golden Triangle BID. The panel will select one or more designs based on originality, ease of maintenance,<br \/>\nand the ability to transform the public space.\u00c2\u00a0 The Call is open to all, however preference will be given to those who work and\/or reside in the Washington Metropolitan Area.\u00c2\u00a0 The selected artist(s) will be<br \/>\nexpected to work with the panel to refine the design for functionality purposes if deemed necessary.
