{"id":2437,"date":"2009-01-30T12:42:02","date_gmt":"2009-01-30T17:42:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=2437"},"modified":"2009-01-30T12:42:02","modified_gmt":"2009-01-30T17:42:02","slug":"friday-notes-please-no-more-snow-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2009\/01\/30\/friday-notes-please-no-more-snow-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Notes: Please No More Snow Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Surprise, surprise, people are still dumping money into Obama&#8217;s coffers.\u00c2\u00a0 It appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/nation\/articles\/2009\/01\/30\/inaugural_fund_raising_exceeds_53m\/\">the inaugural committee raised about $8 million more than it had budgeted<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Aim your dollars at more important things, folks.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2009\/jan\/30\/iceland-join-eu\">Iceland on the fast track to the EU<\/a>?\u00c2\u00a0 Probably a good idea overall, but its a pretty sad circumstance that brought us to that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The conservative government in Reykjavik, in power for 18 years, collapsed this week, the first government to fall as a result of the financial meltdown which has wrecked the Icelandic currency, the krona, wiped out savings and pensions, required a massive IMF bailout, sparked unprecedented riots in Reykjavik, and forced the formation of a caretaker centre-left government until new elections can be held, probably on 9 May.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Rod Blagojevich is gone, but let&#8217;s not forget that he wasn&#8217;t the only one behaving badly.\u00c2\u00a0 As I&#8217;ve written, the Senate refusal to seat Roland Burris was a bad idea &#8211; you don&#8217;t get to refuse someone just because you don&#8217;t like them.\u00c2\u00a0 And that bad judgment seems to have extended to the House, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2009\/1\/26\/121715\/455\/385\/689135\">where Adam Bonin found<\/a> &#8211; buried in the stimulus bill &#8211; the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>SEC. 1112. ADDITIONAL ASSURANCE OF APPROPRIATE USE OF FUNDS.<\/p>\n<p>None of the funds provided by this Act may be made available to the State of Illinois, or any agency of the State, unless (1) the use of such funds by the State is approved in legislation enacted by the State after the date of the enactment of this Act, or (2) Rod R. Blagojevich no longer holds the office of Governor of the State of Illinois.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, that says what you think it says.\u00c2\u00a0 Adam explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Got that, Illinois Senate? \u00c2\u00a0If you want the money, remove Blagojevich from power or otherwise pass a bill making clear that you trust him with the money. \u00c2\u00a0This provision was inserted by Reps. Bill Foster (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/politicsNews\/idUSTRE50L0AU20090122\">could cost the state $50 billion in federal aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the general <em>yuck<\/em> factor, does anyone else remember the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_of_attainder#American_usage\">Bill of Attainder clause<\/a> in the Constitution? \u00c2\u00a0It basically says that Congress can&#8217;t pass a law punishing an individual without judicial trial; that&#8217;s the courts&#8217; job. \u00c2\u00a0Similar concerns rest here: it&#8217;s not for Congress to decide who&#8217;s fit to be Governor of Illinois; that&#8217;s something to be handled in Springfield.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A circus, it seems, and everyone wants in on the action.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
