Today is the beginning of NoRuz.\u00c2\u00a0 What’s that?\u00c2\u00a0 Here’s a short cut and paste<\/a>:<\/p>\n

[NoRuz] is the traditional Iranian<\/a> new year<\/a> holiday<\/a> celebrated by Iranian peoples<\/a>, having its roots in Ancient Iran<\/a>. Apart from the Iranian cultural continent<\/a> (Greater Iran<\/em>), the celebration has spread in many other parts of the world, including parts of Central Asia<\/a>, South Asia<\/a>, Northwestern China<\/a>, the Crimea<\/a>, and some ethnic groups in Albania<\/a>, Bosnia<\/a>, Kosovo<\/a> and the Republic of Macedonia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian year<\/a> and is a secular holiday. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox<\/a>, which usually occurs on March 21<\/a> or the previous\/following day depending on where it is observed. As well as being a Zoroastrian<\/a> holiday and having significance amongst the Zoroastrian ancestors of modern Iranians. According to Encyclopedia Britannica<\/a>, the Jewish festival of Purim<\/a>, is probably adopted from the Persian New Year.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/a><\/sup> It is also a holy day for Ismailis, Alawites<\/a>, <\/span><\/a><\/sup> Alevis<\/a>, and adherents of the Bah\u00c3\u00a1’\u00c3\u00ad Faith<\/a>.<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, I’m not one for holidays (religious or otherwise), but I can really appreciate a celebration of the Spring Equinox.<\/p>\n
