{"id":2787,"date":"2009-04-16T10:12:56","date_gmt":"2009-04-16T14:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=2787"},"modified":"2009-04-16T10:12:56","modified_gmt":"2009-04-16T14:12:56","slug":"nsa-wiretapping-maybe-now-congress-will-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2009\/04\/16\/nsa-wiretapping-maybe-now-congress-will-care\/","title":{"rendered":"NSA Wiretapping: Maybe Now Congress Will Care?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/16\/us\/16nsa.html\">Story of the day<\/a>, for sure:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While the N.S.A.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s operations in recent months have come under examination, new details are also emerging about earlier domestic-surveillance activities, including the agency\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s attempt to wiretap a member of Congress, without court approval, on an overseas trip, current and former intelligence officials said.<\/p>\n<p>[ . . . ]<\/p>\n<p>And in one previously undisclosed episode, the N.S.A. tried to wiretap a member of Congress without a warrant, an intelligence official with direct knowledge of the matter said.<\/p>\n<p>The agency believed that the congressman, whose identity could not be determined, was in contact \u00e2\u20ac\u201d as part of a Congressional delegation to the Middle East in 2005 or 2006 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d with an extremist who had possible terrorist ties and was already under surveillance, the official said. The agency then sought to eavesdrop on the congressman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conversations, the official said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to think that we&#8217;ll be getting more of the facts of that case shortly.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d also like to think that the every person at the NSA who thought that was a good idea will be gone, soon (of course, they won&#8217;t be).\u00c2\u00a0 But while the case above may be the instance that motivates Congress to care a bit more, this is why we should <em>all<\/em> care more:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153overcollection\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of domestic communications of Americans.
