{"id":2901,"date":"2009-05-14T23:20:49","date_gmt":"2009-05-15T03:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=2901"},"modified":"2009-05-15T00:29:33","modified_gmt":"2009-05-15T04:29:33","slug":"government-support-for-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2009\/05\/14\/government-support-for-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Support for Journalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Had the good fortune to spend some time this week talking and thinking about the future of traditional media.\u00c2\u00a0 There is, as you&#8217;ve probably heard, a fair amount of support for various modes of government action.\u00c2\u00a0 Within that context, I think <a href=\"http:\/\/mediactive.com\/2009\/05\/13\/governments-long-history-of-supporting-journalism\/\">Dan Gillmor&#8217;s got a post<\/a> worth reading:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But as people decry or laugh off a bailout of newspapers, as the New York Times\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 David Carr <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/05\/11\/business\/media\/11carr.html?_r=1&amp;scp=2&amp;sq=carr&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_top\">did yesterday<\/a> in his column, they should remember that government has never entirely lacked financial influence \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t lack it now \u00e2\u20ac\u201d over the journalism business.<\/p>\n<p>Governments play major roles in the success or failure of all kinds of business. How corporations do business, and which ones pay which taxes, are decided by lawmakers.
