{"id":3168,"date":"2009-07-31T13:40:44","date_gmt":"2009-07-31T17:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=3168"},"modified":"2009-07-31T14:59:28","modified_gmt":"2009-07-31T18:59:28","slug":"southern-stupid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2009\/07\/31\/southern-stupid\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Stupid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I used to try and defend the South against stereotype-fueled charges of racism and ignorance, but I&#8217;ve long since stopped, in part because of things <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/2009\/07\/sweet_home_alabama.php?ref=fpblg\">like this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It turns out, less than surprisingly, that the <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2009\/07\/poll-28-of-republican-base-are-birthers.php?ref=fpa\">cradle of the birther faith is in the South<\/a>. Just shy of a majority of Southerners &#8212; not just Republicans, but everyone &#8212; believe Barack Obama was born in the United States. 47% of Southerners say Obama was born in the US; 30% aren&#8217;t sure; and 23% say Obama was not born in the USA.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And for those that don&#8217;t trust a DKos\/Research 2000 poll, <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalwire.com\/archives\/2009\/07\/31\/many_virginians_doubt_obama_citizenship.html?utm_campaign=pwire&amp;utm_medium=pwire.us-twitter&amp;utm_source=direct-pwire.us&amp;utm_content=site-basic\">well<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Public Policy Polling was skeptical of the results found by DailyKos\/Research 2000 that <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalwire.com\/archives\/2009\/07\/31\/fewer_than_half_of_republicans_think_obama_is_a_citizen.html\">fewer than half<\/a> of Republicans believed President Obama was a natural born American citizen.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a Virginia poll currently in the field, PPP <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/ppppolls\/status\/2954187919\">finds<\/a> that just 79 of the first 168 respondents &#8212; both Democrats and Republicans &#8212; think Obama is a citizen, while 56 say he is not and 33 are not sure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> Okay, that&#8217;s it.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2009\/07\/alabama_bans_wine_with_naked_n.html?ft=1&amp;f=103943429%3Fsc%3Dfb&amp;cc=fp\">Get out of the )(*@#@%@# Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to try and defend the South against stereotype-fueled charges of racism and ignorance, but I&#8217;ve long since stopped, in part because of things like this: It turns out, less than surprisingly, that the cradle of the birther faith is in the South.
