Putting aside (work with me here) Blair&#8217;s unfathomable shadowing of Bush in Iraq, Labour&#8217;s domestic policy initiatives &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_national_identity_card\">National ID<\/a>, expanded <a href=\"http:\/\/rawstory.com\/news\/2007\/Orwell_rolls_in_his_grave_0530.html\">CCTV surveillance,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.respect.gov.uk\/article.aspx?id=9066\">anti-social behaviour<\/a> laws, among others &#8211; have me running into the arms of another party.  You know, if there *were* another party to run to.  The Lib Dems?  One trick ponys.  The Tories?  Ha.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to the point of this post.  Honestly, I&#8217;ve been fairly impressed (in a relative sense) with where David Cameron is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/world\/britain\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=7086843\">trying to drag the Tories<\/a>, but I just can&#8217;t imagine myself actually casting a ballot for his party.\u00c2\u00a0 Why?\u00c2\u00a0 Because this is what the Tories have always been,\u00c2\u00a0 and may always be, to me:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photo_zoom.gne?id=231354631&amp;size=o\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/84\/231354631_48ea040f76.jpg\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go on, click it for the high res version and all of its detailed glory.\u00c2\u00a0 Wait.\u00c2\u00a0 To be clear, it&#8217;s horribly racist and ignorant and only (really really) funny if you <a href=\"http:\/\/strangemaps.wordpress.com\/2007\/04\/17\/105-the-tory-atlas-of-the-world\/\">paid attention<\/a> to the Tories in the 70s and 80s.\u00c2\u00a0 When I hear &#8220;Tory&#8221;, two things come to mind: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enoch_Powell\">Enoch &#8220;Rivers of Blood&#8221; Powell<\/a> and the sort of mindset that could create this map (sans humour).\u00c2\u00a0 To be fair, I&#8217;ve not lived in Britain for forever and a day,\u00c2\u00a0 and maybe the Tories are honestly and truly changing.\u00c2\u00a0 But I doubt it, and David Cameron &amp; Co. will have to work pretty hard to overcome this map.<\/p>\n<p>(This post courtesy of my exploration of the many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benjaminedwards.net\/Writings\/walmart%20map.htm\">glorious maps<\/a> highlighted by <a href=\"http:\/\/waldo.jaquith.org\/blog\/2007\/06\/strange-maps\/\">Waldo&#8217;s link<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/strangemaps.wordpress.com\">StrangeMaps.<\/a>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I, and many of my fellow countrymen, have been extraordinarily disappointed with Labour of late.
