{"id":4027,"date":"2010-06-29T22:45:52","date_gmt":"2010-06-30T02:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=4027"},"modified":"2010-06-29T22:45:52","modified_gmt":"2010-06-30T02:45:52","slug":"batch-operation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2010\/06\/29\/batch-operation\/","title":{"rendered":"Batch Operation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes this place gets trapped in a bit of aspirational paralysis &#8211; I have so many things put aside to be noted and written about that I&#8217;m unable to get started on any one in particular. \u00c2\u00a0So, forgive (and hopefully enjoy) some of the declutter:<\/p>\n<p>Matt Tabbai <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/matt-taibbi\/blogs\/TaibbiData_May2010\/122137\/83512\">takes on<\/a> Lara Logan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/06\/28\/lara-logan-slams-michael_n_627601.html\">ridiculous attack<\/a> on the journalism of Mike Hastings (author of the piece that sent McChrystal packing).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>See, according to Logan, not only are reporters not supposed to disclose their agendas to sources at all times, but in the case of covering the military, one isn&#8217;t even supposed to have an agenda that might upset the brass! Why? Because there is an &#8220;element of trust&#8221; that you&#8217;re supposed to have when you hang around the likes of a McChrystal. You cover a war commander, he&#8217;s got to be able to trust that you&#8217;re not going to embarrass him. Otherwise, how can he possibly feel confident that the right message will get out?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you click on nothing else in this post, click on the first link.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>As ever, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/06\/28\/cuccinelli-14th-amendment\/\">is an embarrassment<\/a> to decent people everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t expect England to get near the finals, but I didn&#8217;t expect them to go home so soon. \u00c2\u00a0I much would have preferred they face Ghana than Germany. \u00c2\u00a0 James Fallows has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2010\/06\/the-wonderful-self-loathing-of-the-english-fan-updated\/58801\/\">a great roundup<\/a> of the dark mood that befell most of the British press by the end of the ENG-GER match.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>If the title of this doesn&#8217;t take you there, I don&#8217;t know what to say &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/cyclinginquisition.blogspot.com\/2009\/11\/pablo-escobar-guerrillas-and-my-dream.html\">Pablo Escobar, Guerillas, and My Dream Bike<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0The world is filled with amazing stories.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Jon Shure attempts to answer the question &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.offthechartsblog.org\/if-you-tax-them-will-they-flee\/\">If You Tax Them, Will They Flee?<\/a> It&#8217;s not a bad analysis to pull out whenever you start hearing the &#8220;If we raise taxes here, we&#8217;ll drive out all the rich!&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s something I hear around here (DC\/VA\/MD) in cycles, and yet people pretty much stay put. \u00c2\u00a0Shocking, no?<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>A perhaps surprising admission &#8211; I&#8217;m enjoying the Kagan confirmation hearings. \u00c2\u00a0Some of it is being reminded of con law issues I&#8217;d long since forgotten, or getting a quick sketch of where current hot issues stand. \u00c2\u00a0And part of it is just the mostly friendly approach of all involved. \u00c2\u00a0Unfortunately, there&#8217;s always <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/416347\/vile-racist-scumbag-jeff-sessions-its-his-day-to-shine\">Jeff Sessions (R-Unreconstructed South)<\/a> to spoil things. \u00c2\u00a0Christ is he <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/06\/sessions-compares-citizens-united-to-landmark-civil-rights-case.php?ref=fpb\">dumber than a box of rocks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2010\/06\/25\/i-have-noticed-that.html\">this only happens in academia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>The Airbus A380 <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703513604575310622939329664.html?mod=WSJ_hp_mostpop_read\">continues to be a draw for some travelers<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0The closest I&#8217;ve gotten to one was on the tarmac at LAX, unfortunately. \u00c2\u00a0Someday. \u00c2\u00a0Soon, I hope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes this place gets trapped in a bit of aspirational paralysis &#8211;
