{"id":4033,"date":"2010-07-06T09:29:19","date_gmt":"2010-07-06T13:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=4033"},"modified":"2010-07-06T09:29:19","modified_gmt":"2010-07-06T13:29:19","slug":"preserving-bps-interests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2010\/07\/06\/preserving-bps-interests\/","title":{"rendered":"Preserving BP&#8217;s Interests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Glenn Greenwald <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/opinion\/glenn_greenwald\/2010\/07\/05\/bp\/index.html\">assembles evidence<\/a> in support of claims that state, local, and Federal law enforcement officials are helping BP intimidate reporters and shield the cleanup operations from public\u00c2\u00a0scrutiny:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/rights-stuff\/2010\/06\/BP-louisiana-police-stop-activist\" target=\"_blank\">documented one incident which was particularly chilling<\/a> of an activist who &#8212; after being told by a local police officer to stop filming a BP\u00c2\u00a0facility because &#8220;BP didn&#8217;t want him filming&#8221; &#8212; was then pulled over after he left by that officer so he could be interrogated\u00c2\u00a0<strong>by a BP security official<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0McClelland also described how BP has virtually bought entire Police Departments which now do its bidding:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;One parish has 57 extra shifts per week that they are devoting entirely to, basically, BP security detail, and BP is paying the sheriff&#8217;s office.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even better, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/photographer-detained-briefly-by-bp-and-local-police\">a linked ProPublica article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A photographer taking pictures for these articles, was detained Friday while shooting pictures in Texas City, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The photographer, Lance Rosenfield, said that shortly after arriving in town, he was confronted by a BP security officer, local police and a man who identified himself as an agent of the Department of Homeland Security. He was released after the police\u00c2\u00a0<strong>reviewed the pictures<\/strong> he had taken on Friday and\u00c2\u00a0<strong>recorded his date of birth, Social Security number and other personal information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The police officer then turned that information over to the BP security guard<\/strong> under what he said was standard procedure, according to Rosenfield.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Further:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/rawstory.com\/rs\/2010\/0704\/coast-guard-bans-reporters-oil-cleanup-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\">More evidence here<\/a> (h\/t\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/letters.salon.com\/opinion\/greenwald\/2010\/07\/05\/bp\/permalink\/78d4b48e2b8501aa89f22750106b0e4a.html\">bamage<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>Journalists who come too close to oil spill clean-up efforts without permission could find themselves facing\u00c2\u00a0<strong>a $40,000 fine and even one to five years in prison under a new rule instituted by the Coast Guard late last week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a move that outraged observers have decried as an attack on First Amendment rights.
