{"id":4102,"date":"2010-08-26T20:49:36","date_gmt":"2010-08-27T00:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=4102"},"modified":"2010-08-26T20:49:36","modified_gmt":"2010-08-27T00:49:36","slug":"debating-the-surveillance-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2010\/08\/26\/debating-the-surveillance-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Debating the Surveillance State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Glenn Greenwald <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/opinion\/glenn_greenwald\/index.html?story=\/opinion\/greenwald\/2010\/08\/26\/surveillance\">keeps up the good fight<\/a> in responding to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cato-unbound.org\/2010\/08\/11\/john-eastman\/surveillance-of-our-enemies-during-wartime-i%E2%80%99m-shocked\/\">two<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cato-unbound.org\/2010\/08\/13\/paul-rosenzweig\/the-sky-isnt-falling\/\">essays<\/a> which:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>perfectly illustrate the continuous stream of manipulative fear-mongering over the last decade which has reduced much of the American citizenry into a meek and submissive faction for whom no asserted government power is too extreme, provided the scary menace of &#8216;Terrorism&#8217; is uttered to justify it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And really, please read the links given via &#8220;two essays&#8221; above. While this subject sometimes feels like a hobby horse that I&#8217;m either riding or beating to death, I continue to believe that it is an issue critical to our society. \u00c2\u00a0And yes, things *have* changed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Every President until George W. Bush &#8212; including Ronald Reagan &#8212; was able to keep the country safe while adhering to that surveillance safeguard. But while even the most hawkish Americans in the 1980s &#8212; facing the Soviet threat &#8212; understood that domestic eavesdropping should be conducted only with judicial warrants, the war cheerleaders of the current decade insist that the far less formidable threat from Muslim extremists means we must vest the Government with the power of warrantless surveillance &#8212; even on American citizens, on U.S. soil.
