{"id":4146,"date":"2010-09-20T15:45:45","date_gmt":"2010-09-20T19:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=4146"},"modified":"2010-09-20T16:07:09","modified_gmt":"2010-09-20T20:07:09","slug":"a-morning-ride-with-capital-bikeshare-in-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2010\/09\/20\/a-morning-ride-with-capital-bikeshare-in-dc\/","title":{"rendered":"Photos: A Morning Ride with Capital Bikeshare in DC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you might have heard, <a href=\"http:\/\/capitalbikeshare.com\/\">Capital Bikeshare<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arlnow.com\/2010\/09\/20\/arlington-represented-at-the-capital-bikeshare-launch\/\">launched today<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0As part of the launch, staff and volunteers rode the bikes from the Navy Yard\/Department of Transportation to stations around the city. \u00c2\u00a0It wasn&#8217;t all of the bikes (it&#8217;ll take another week or so to get all the stations in place, I understand), but it was quite a few:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4128\/5009027168_5c44be7712.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was tapped to lead a group to the station at the corner of 21st and I St (NW).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4151\/5009029636_79be8b8503.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It turned out to be a very DC ride with a very DC group of people (policy analyst, political staffer, university staffer and lawyer (me) made up my group). \u00c2\u00a0We start by heading up New Jersey Ave SE (that is not my thumb. \u00c2\u00a0Because I would never do that. \u00c2\u00a0Obviously.):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4105\/5008424233_b69648133f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>New Jersey Ave is closed to most vehicular traffic near the Capitol, but bit of bollard threading brought us out to Independence, where we made a left:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4103\/5009031138_6f10fd8946.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And from there, we wrapped around the front of the Capitol on First St., and then down Pennsylvania, where we hoped to take advantage of the new bike lanes. \u00c2\u00a0Except:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4144\/5009031726_81433efc3f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ah, another MPD officer who confuses bike lanes for parking spots. \u00c2\u00a0Always one or two around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4132\/5009032252_8a6e619811.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Except, wait, why so many? \u00c2\u00a0And what&#8217;s up with that really angry one who decided that the best way to communicate with citizens is to adopt an overly aggressive and hostile tone while forcing us onto the sidewalk? \u00c2\u00a0Oh, this is why:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4087\/5009033010_956cc65e23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Obamacade! \u00c2\u00a0With that out of the way, we retake the street (because the MPD&#8217;s just gonna hang out in the lanes a little longer, thankyouverymuch):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4127\/5008429075_21b0917e42.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We make a right on 15th to get up to I St., except . . . street closed again. \u00c2\u00a0Back onto the sidewalk (walking, of course, because you can&#8217;t bike on the sidewalk in the Central Business District in DC). \u00c2\u00a0Why closed? \u00c2\u00a0Oh, sit in:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4145\/5009036076_ffeec0fe32.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These folks were probably about 15 minutes away from getting arrested, I&#8217;m thinking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4131\/5008430865_8868d503d6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, from 15th we turn and head westward on I St. \u00c2\u00a0Hey, look, another unfair labor practices picket line (it was noted that the people in this line are probably not the usuals that get hired to do it):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4133\/5008433129_68e3d47a3d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And we arrive and dock the bikes at 21st and I, just at the edge of the George Washington University campus. \u00c2\u00a0Success!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4132\/5008419247_ff872f24a5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a great ride, and I got to start my week with my friends Tim &amp; Chris from\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bikearlington.com\/\">BikeArlington<\/a>, Chantal\/Greg &amp; the rest of the staff from\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/waba.org\">WABA<\/a>, Chris from\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cycleboredom.com\/\">Cycleboredom<\/a>, Joel of\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gwadzilla.blogspot.com\/\">Gwadzilla<\/a>, Angela\/Jakob of\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/revolutioncycles.com\/\">Revolution Cycles<\/a>, Jay\/Walter\/Chris of\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arlingtonva.us\/Departments\/CountyBoard\/CountyBoardMain.aspx\">Arlington County<\/a>, Fionualla of\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fabb-bikes.org\/\">FABB<\/a>, and a bunch of other bike (and otherwise) friendly faces I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;m forgetting right now. \u00c2\u00a0All in all, an <em>excellent<\/em> way to kick off the week.<\/p>\n<p>And Capital Bikeshare?
