Remember the coverage about Dubai’s threatening to shut down Blackberry service unless it could gain access to user communications? \u00c2\u00a0And how the US would never do that? \u00c2\u00a0Well<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications \u00e2\u20ac\u201d including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like\u00c2\u00a0Facebook<\/a> and software that allows direct \u00e2\u20ac\u0153peer to peer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d messaging like\u00c2\u00a0Skype<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Specifically:<\/p>\n

[O]fficials are coalescing around several of the proposal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s likely requirements:<\/p>\n

– Communications services that encrypt messages must have a way to unscramble them.<\/p>\n

– Foreign-based providers that do business inside the United States must install a domestic office capable of performing intercepts.<\/p>\n

– Developers of software that enables peer-to-peer communication must redesign their service to allow interception.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What could possibly go wrong, eh?<\/p>\n

Steven M. Bellovin<\/a>, a\u00c2\u00a0Columbia University<\/a> computer science professor, pointed to anepisode in Greece<\/a>: In 2005, it was discovered that hackers had taken advantage of a legally mandated wiretap function to spy on top officials\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 phones, including the prime minister\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s.<\/p>\n
