{"id":4747,"date":"2011-07-12T09:43:10","date_gmt":"2011-07-12T13:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=4747"},"modified":"2011-07-12T09:43:10","modified_gmt":"2011-07-12T13:43:10","slug":"cycling-and-the-rule-of-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2011\/07\/12\/cycling-and-the-rule-of-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycling and the Rule of Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the middle of contemplating (and deciding against) responding to <a href=\"http:\/\/ballston.patch.com\/blog_posts\/bikers-and-why-you-irk-me\">this ridiculous piece at the Ballston Patch<\/a>, and getting a rather positive impression of recent ACPD enforcement efforts along the Custis Trail, I came across one of the smartest posts on cycling and the law that I&#8217;ve ever seen:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you tried to survive [on the road] by counting on people to follow the formal rules, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be toast. Some of this is just ignorance of the law, but some of it\u00e2\u20ac\u201clike speeding\u00e2\u20ac\u201cis the result of informal practices that dominate the formal rules. Some of those informal practices might be more efficient than their formal counterparts, but surely some are not.
