Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bruce Schneier&#8217;s been great this week, but I want to highlight <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schneier.com\/blog\/archives\/2008\/04\/the_feeling_and_1.html\">his essay<\/a> on the difference between <em>feeling<\/em> safe and actually <em>being<\/em> safe:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Security is both a feeling and a reality, and they&#8217;re different. You can feel secure even though you&#8217;re not, and you can be secure even though you don&#8217;t feel it. There are two different concepts mapped onto the same word &#8212; the English language isn&#8217;t working very well for us here &#8212; and it can be hard to know which one we&#8217;re talking about when we use the word.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is an important distinction, and the confusion between the two concepts of security has undermined a lot of (stated) public policy.  We&#8217;d all do better to remember and recognize the distinction the next time something is justified in the name of &#8220;security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>RIP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtoncitypaper.com\/display.php?id=34873\">Sakhi Gulestan<\/a>, one of DC&#8217;s good people.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>The Unholy Rouleur helps us with a field guide to the <a href=\"http:\/\/unholyrouleur-jim.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/rites-of-spring.html\">seasonal species that will soon be invading our bike trails<\/a>. Really worth a look.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/04\/06\/education\/06philosophy.html?ex=1208145600&amp;en=1c3585fc82773e7f&amp;ei=5070&amp;emc=eta1\">Philosophy on the rise<\/a> as a college major?  Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>Hmm.  It&#8217;s already 66\u00c2\u00b0F\/19\u00c2\u00b0C at 9am.   And sunny.  All that catch-up work and owed-email I&#8217;m sitting on and was hoping to push out late this afternoon?  Sorry, all.
