{"id":862,"date":"2008-05-30T11:13:44","date_gmt":"2008-05-30T15:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/?p=862"},"modified":"2008-05-30T11:13:44","modified_gmt":"2008-05-30T15:13:44","slug":"friday-notes-feeling-like-im-missing-something-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blacknell.net\/dynamic\/2008\/05\/30\/friday-notes-feeling-like-im-missing-something-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Notes: Feeling Like I&#8217;m Missing Something Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you live in the US, the initials GM probably bring a car company to mind, and then likely nothing after that.\u00c2\u00a0 If you live in the EU, you&#8217;re probably sick to death of hearing about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genetically_modified_food\">Genetically Modified food<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always been a bit disappointed by the lack of a public conversation about it in the US.\u00c2\u00a0 Not because I think that GM necessarily equals danger to human health &#8211; that&#8217;s a question of science.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather, I have strong societal concerns about it &#8211; something as basic as food ought not be subject to intellectual property laws, and thus controlled by a few owners.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a great <a href=\"http:\/\/phronesisaical.blogspot.com\/2008\/05\/binary-code-dining.html\">quick summary<\/a> over at Phronesisaical, which in turn points us to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/politics\/features\/2008\/05\/monsanto200805\">this Vanity Fair article on Monsanto<\/a>, describing it as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a look at Monsanto&#8217;s approach to &#8220;protecting&#8221; its intellectual property &#8212; its phalanx of investigators and lawyers threatening farmers (and some non-farmers) who they suspect of planting their GMO seeds without paying for them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Worth reading.<\/p>\n<p>~<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Party of Virginia is having its nominating convention this weekend (apparently picking their nominee is too important to be left to a statewide vote).\u00c2\u00a0 Waldo gives us his <a href=\"http:\/\/waldo.jaquith.org\/blog\/2008\/05\/my-rpv-convention-wish-list\/\">wishlist of results<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 My favorite observation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[G]iven a choice, Virginia Republicans will always choose wrong.
