The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a<br \/>\nfirearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for<br \/>\ntraditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.<br \/>\nPp. 2\u00e2\u20ac\u201c53.<br \/>\n(a) The Amendment\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s prefatory clause announces a purpose, but<br \/>\ndoes not limit or expand the scope of the second part, the operative<br \/>\nclause.<\/p>\n<p>[ . . . ]<\/p>\n<p>2. Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited.<br \/>\nIt is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any<br \/>\nmanner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed<br \/>\nweapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment<br \/>\nor state analogues. The Court\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s opinion should not be taken to cast<br \/>\ndoubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by<br \/>\nfelons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms<br \/>\nin sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or<br \/>\nlaws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of<br \/>\narms.
