The military trainers who came to Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo Bay in December 2002 based an entire interrogation class on a chart showing the effects of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153coercive management techniques\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for possible use on prisoners, including \u00e2\u20ac\u0153sleep deprivation,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153prolonged constraint,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153exposure.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

The 1957 article from which the chart was copied was entitled \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Communist Attempts to Elicit False Confessions From Air Force Prisoners of War\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and written by Alfred D. Biderman, a sociologist then working for the Air Force, who died in 2003. Mr. Biderman had interviewed American prisoners returning from North Korea, some of whom had been filmed by their Chinese interrogators confessing to germ warfare and other atrocities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That’s right. The US national security hinges upon (to hear the President and his defenders tell it) adherence to Chinese-developed torture techniques studied and determined to result in false confessions. And what was on this chart, exactly?<\/p>\n

The chart also listed other techniques used by the Chinese, including \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Semi-Starvation,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Exploitation of Wounds,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Filthy, Infested Surroundings,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and with their effects: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Makes Victim Dependent on Interrogator,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Weakens Mental and Physical Ability to Resist,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Reduces Prisoner to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcAnimal Level\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Concerns.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

The only change made in the chart presented at Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo was to drop its original title: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Communist Coercive Methods for Eliciting Individual Compliance.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
