Midweek Makeover: The Beat Remains the Same

Not exactly a cover, tonight.  Or even a traditional mashup (did I just say “traditional mashup?”  Eesh.).  Rather, it’s yet another cultural intersection piece.  The first video is from Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit, and the song is Choli Ke Peeche (What’s Behind that Blouse?):

Lyrics here, while you watch.  Seriously, check them out – it’s hot.  It’s about asking what the other will forsake for her, and her desire for him.  Which brings us to the “cover”, the product of some enterprising young person with musical tastes that extend beyond Bollywood:

I think it works pretty well, no?

Inspired by the bollywood music cover, I suggest you start a ‘movie cover’ thread, where you can show movies that were inspired by hollywood, that are remade in bollywood or elsewhere. Here is the first of many –

    What is ‘Memento’ about?

Starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Ann Moss in lead roles, ‘Memento’ tells the story of a man named Leonard who is searching for the killer of his wife. The problem is that he suffers from amnesia, which he contracted in a head injury during the attack that killed his wife. With his limited memory Leonard zeroes down on his wife’s killer by keeping notes, taking photographs and making tattoos on his body to remember things.

What is ‘Ghajini’ released in 2005 in Tamil about –
Sanjay Ramasamy (Surya Sivakumar) is a rich tycoon suffering from short term memory loss due to being hit by a metal pole when trying to intervene on his girlfriend’s murder. Because of the severe injury on his head, his memory can only last for fifteen minutes and he doesn’t remember events or incidents that have happened before in his life. He can now only live a comprehendable life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera to remind himself of the incidents that have happened.

    Incredible India, indeed.

DT, a movie cover thread needs an entire blog, I would think, not just a thread (or two).

Besides which, I’d recommend talking about movies that *Hollywood* has covered/appropriated from elsewhere, not the other way around; from the relatively decent ones (Seven Samurai into The Magnificent Seven) to the crappy ones (La Femme Nikita into Point of No Return). In fact, you could do an entire subset of posts on all the French movies Hollywood has bastardized (although soemthing like Three Men and a Baby was a lost cause from the original onward…)

(Something I just remembered: the Indian movie Sholay was loosely inspired by the base story of The Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai, I believe. There’s an interesting transition for you.)

I see an opportunity for collaboration, here . . .

But first I need DT’s help in proving my theory that for every Janet Jackson track ever laid down, there were at least three derivative Indian pop songs.

You know, I never really thought about it, but I think your theory–or a more generic version of it–could also be applied to Iranian pop songs. Hmmm.
(Great, like I need *another* excuse to waste time on youtube!)
