    So, am I right that the letters go to those killed, not those who “just” die? Because I could see at some point someone saying that a mental illness leading to suicide is not all that different than dying from any other illness, and we’re not going to write letters for that group.

    That isn’t to say I’m against the letters.

    But also, that there are enough instances where an issue like this commands attention?

    The tremendous stress that being in the military puts on military personnel and their families undoubtedly increases suicide rates. No matter the cause of death, military families deserve the sympathy of the Commander in Chief.
