If Pakistan Can Do It . . .

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf resigns ahead of impeachment proceedings.  Excerpts from resignation speech here.  A bit of analysis here.  Let’s hope there’s such thing as a quiet retirement from politics in Pakistan.

sadly Pakistan’s govt has a reputation and track record of being quite corrupt regardless of who is in power. This opens the door for exiled leaders to return (i.e. Bhutto, Sharif) despite their corrupt pasts. I fear we haven’t heard the last of Musharraf.

Well, I’m pretty sure we can write Bhutto off, but there may be a worry in Zardari. I’ve also got a hard time fathoming how years hanging out in Saudi can have improved Sharif. That said, this is a positive step forward. I think Musharraf is done (and shockingly, done AND alive. Unless we see him done in in the next few days, I think he’ll be a beacon of hope for military dictators looking for a retirement plan.).
