Weekend Music: British Columbia Edition

Some day, I’m going to catch up.  Just not today.  This weekend’s musical theme?  A last minute (and desperately needed) road trip that found me and a friend in Vancouver and Whistler, a few years ago.  One of the highlights was a day out on the water (during which I only narrowly managed to avoid causing thousands upon thousands of dollars of damage in a Horseshoe Bay marina).

Really, aside from a rather unpleasant lesson in exactly what a Bloody Caesar is (clamato?  are you kidding me?), it was a fantastic trip.  This is part of the Sea to Sky Highway soundtrack:

(Sweet Jane is one of my favorite songs of all time, and hangs so very perfectly on Vancouver)

  1. Great photo. Fun town. My wife and I spent a few days there (and in Victoria) about 13 years ago, in February. While the whether was a little cooler (though pleasant and sunny) we had a wonderful time.

The drink we remember was an Irish coffee made with maple syrup liquour, after dinner at the Vancouver Hyatt. I’ve frequently tried to find some since (including at the biggest liquor store in Alaska), and have never been able to find it. Did you make it to the Catalano Suspension Bridge? My wife flatly refused to hug a tree.

  2. Hi Mark,

I just stopped by to see if you were covering the Tour of Missouri. Good to find out your in B.C. Even better!

Five years ago near the end of three week bike trip through Alberta and BC, I took the ferry from Vancouver Island back to the mainland landing in Horseshoe Bay. I then cycled back to Vancouver to end of my trip. I really enjoyed BC coastline.

    cheers and have fun,
    Steve

Thanks for thinking of me, Steve. Sadly, I am not in MO or BC (this post did reference a Sept. trip to BC, but it was a few years ago).

Trying to imagine the route between Horseshoe and Vancouver – anything but a straight and level line, I’m thinking . . .

(As always, I’m enjoying Steephill.tv – thanks for all the work that goes into it.)

No, never made it to that bridge (Capilano, I think you’re referring to). Worth checking out on a return visit, it looks like.

I hate you guys for making me so envious of a trip in the past. But I love you for loving the CJ’s version of Sweet Jane, which reeks of my first couple of years of grad school for me in the best possible way.

Also, Caesars are freaking fantastic, and this comes from someone who would normally shun the very notion of Clamato existing in the world. So salty and yum.

BTW, do you know you look a bit like Elvis?

That would be the first time anyone has ever said that. I think I should be worried.

(But I would totally wear the jumpsuits. At least once, anyway.)
