I was in San Francisco a few years back when the papers reported that the thousandth person to die jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge had committed suicide. It apparently was an event that local authorities had resisted publishing, to avoid a “rush” to achieve this dubious milestone.

I think Aokigahara Forest in Japan still has the Golden Gate beat. They also have a sign outside the forest too (and police patrols as well, I think).
