Politics, open government, and safe streets. And the constant incursion of cycling.

Overnight Music: Hawai’i Edition

We were on our way to the Honolulu Zoo – walking through the edge of the concert lawn to get there – when we stopped to listen as we heard a band start its sound check. Meant nothing to me at the time, but for some reason I remember it well.  Soon enough I’d recognize those opening notes:

And then there was Ethan Allen Court, where most everything had to do with Star Wars or Haro freestyle bikes with mag rims.  All discussed to a soundtrack involving Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike:

When we moved, we stayed in a Waikiki hotel for a while. In the evenings, I could sometimes evade the parental leash and explore a little bit on my own. There is a section between two hotels, where a narrow concrete sidewalk separated the ocean from a poolside bar. I’d sit on that sidewalk at night, with my legs dangling over the edge. And more often than not, the bar would be playing this:

Overnight Music: Georgia On My Mind

All this writing about the Tour de Georgia has gotten me in the mood for my Georgia music.  No, it’s not Ray (tho’ there’s nothing wrong with him).  Tonight, we’ve got Billy Preston, the reason I still have vinyl:

Overnight Music: Day Late

Every once in a while, I go foraging for new music.  What I turn up is usually old to the cool kids, but it’s been a while since my musical enjoyment depended on outside approval. The first is I Believe, from Simian Mobile Disco (which evolved from Simian, who lent the soundtrack to perhaps one of my favorite ever commercials):

The second is just a lovely little bit of music.  Should appeal to anyone who had stacks of Echo & the Bunnymen, Mighty Lemondrops, or Cure albums around.  I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You, by Black Kids:

Enjoy.

See you in hell, Pachelbel

The beginning is obvious, but it finishes in (for me) unconsidered but familiar places. Check it out:

The last video appears to be someone’s personal project – well worth checking out.

Overnight Music: RAD!

One of my best friends on the planet was in town recently, and at some point the conversation meandered to the bootleg movies on VHS tape that we wore out as kids.  In honor of that, I present the following:

That was his.  The next two are mine:

Overnight Music: North Sea

The 80s saw a lot of trips between our home in Fulda (Germany) and our family in Nottingham (England). This trip always involved an overnight ferry, often from Zeebrugge to Hull (occasionally returning Dover to Calais). We usually had a family cabin, and my parents fell asleep long before I was willing to call it a day. As a result, I often ended up in P&O’s casinos or at the edge of dancefloors I shouldn’t have been. This is (part of) the soundtrack of those nights.

Overnight Music: Jawohl, Frankfurt!
