Absolutes of Faith: Arrogance, Dogma, Ignorance

Speaking of Social Obscenities

You’re a liar and a bigot, Victoria Cobb.

The other side

This is the sort of thing that usually makes me roll my eyes when people in the US say they’re emmigrating to the UK or somesuch nonsense. I love England, but they’ve got their own set of political and social obscenities.

It matters to *all* of us.

Please spread this far and wide.

Amen

Atrios says what many of us wondered, after seeing the RNC’s most recent ad featuring Bin Ladin:

The point of terrorism is, as the name suggests, to terrorize. Not simply to kill and destroy, but to frighten the broader population. It puzzles me why the RNC has found common cause with terrorists in their new ad campaign, and it puzzles me more why they want to highlight the fact that over 5 years after 9/11 George Bush has failed to catch the guy responsible.

And Markos puts an even blunter point on it – “Terrorists and the GOP, in common cause.”  And yes, I’ll stand by that.

Spot On

Over at BoingBoing, Cory Doctorow puts it perfectly:

Content isn’t king. If I sent you to a desert island and gave you the choice of taking your friends or your movies, you’d choose your friends — if you chose the movies, we’d call you a sociopath. Conversation is king. Content is just something to talk about.”

For example, I love The Wire.  It’s an excellent show that can lay a solid claim on being the best television out there.  But what do I enjoy most about the Wire?  Talking about it.  Talking about how it captures some of my own experiences.  Talking about about how it helps illustrate the interconnected nature of a city.   So, as great as it is to watch it, the conversations it inspires are better.  Perhaps content isn’t “just” something to talk about, but it’s not the end.  It’s a means to a more important end, for me.  And for most of us, I suspect.

Boom.

If this turns out to be true, I pray that those responsible pay dearly.  And I’m not just looking at Pyongyang.

Jailing James Dobson, Forever

Hunter, a frequent and respected diarist on DailyKos, has something up worth reading.

Wow.

There really aren’t any words for this, at the moment. As cynical and partisan as I’ve become in the past few years, I’d really like this to turn out to be a mistake . . .
