Maher on Democrats

Not Maher’s biggest fan here, but he absolutely nails it, starting two minutes in:

“Democrats are the new Republicans.” Indeed.

  1. I stopped watching Maher a while ago. Even a broken clock is right twice a day – and this time, Maher is really right.

But does this make Obama’s fans sad? Such great expectations amounting to so little…

Even though I expected this outcome, I am still disappointed by it. Sometimes low expectations don’t save you from depression.

  3. My disappointment with some of Obama’s policies don’t make me sad because I know full well how much worse it would have been with someone else in the office.

Maher is right more often than not, though his wit is quite acerbic, it is usually quite poignant and sensible. Leaders and statesmen are supposed to take these points and run with them; turning them into real policies. Sadly leadership is in short supply.

As annoyed as I am with the continuation of DOMA/DADT, and the lack of support for universal health insurance; we could be at war with five more countries and have no real plan for any of them. We could have played right into Khamenei and Ahmadinejad’s hands with a less adroit president – very easily. The constantly annoying and un-winnable situation in North Korea could be much, much worse if we had a blustering fool in the oval office…

So be grateful, be incredibly grateful. On foreign policy, Obama is doing a good job. Domestically, we need a new congress – one that did not learn from the possum how to stand for what they believe in.

That’s a fair point, Scott, and one we can all find useful from time to time. But I’m also not interested in continuing the Bush era tradition of “well, if you think *I’m* bad, just imagine what life would be like under [insert litany of horrors].” We can do better. Much.

  5. MB,
If the Democrats are not liberal enough for you MB, I can see why you and Maher are upset living in this country. Latest Pew showed 40+% of the country is conservative, 20% is liberal. As for Universal health care — having escaped from a place that had it, you really do not want it.

These words, they do not mean what you think they mean.

And thanks for the tip on healthcare. I’ll take it for what it’s worth.
