Politics, open government, and safe streets. And the constant incursion of cycling.

Bet you’re sorry now, Joe

Yes, at 8:52pm EDT, I am going out on a limb and blaming this for the end of Joe Lieberman’s 18 year career in the US Senate:

Former Atlanta Mayor Sentenced

Bill Campbell was sentenced to 30 months in prision today. CNN tells us:

Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, who presided over the city’s economic renaissance of the 1990s, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months in prison and fined more than $6,000 for racketeering and tax evasion.

When he was first elected to office, I was very happy – I thought he’d provide a much needed modernization of the city then led by Maynard Jackson. He had a stellar background and seemed genuinely capable of helping Atlanta take off. And take off, it did. Unfortunately, he decided he wanted to use the power of his office to help friends share in that success in ways not available to the rest of us. As he got called on that, he became more interested in defending himself than running a great city. Glad to see he’s getting what he deserves.

Yearly Kos

Instead of finishing and hitting publish on the last dozen in the Draft folder, I’m at YearlyKos. The reporting on it will hit saturation point shortly, if it hasn’t already. So I’ll just leave my take on it (which, at this point, would likely degenerate into a completely unrelated damnation of Las Vegas) at being thrilled to see and hear so many smart and committed citizens in one place.

DC Voting Rights

Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) and Pretend Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D- Doesn’t Have a Vote) introduced a bill to the U.S. House this morning that would apportion two new House seats – one to DC, and one to Utah.  Now, as appalling as it is that even something as fundamental as the right to vote has to fall victim to partisan concerns about party control of the House, I’d gladly give Utah two seats to secure the fundamental right of District citizens to have the same representation as every other American citizen.   You do realize that citizens of DC don’t have a Representative in the House, right?  Or a Senator?  The closest thing they have to effective representation is Virginia’s Tom Davis, and he’s not even a little accountable to them (Holmes Norton doesn’t have anyone’s ear, nevermind the vote).

Former Georgia State School Superintendent Pleads Guilty to Stealing $600k in Federal Education Dollars

You’d have to read to the very end of the story to find out that Linda Schrenko was a Republican (nevermind that she was treated as a GOP star for a while), but I don’t imagine she’ll be attending party fundraisers anytime soon:

ATLANTA (AP) — A former Georgia state school superintendent accused of embezzling $600,0000 and spending it on a facelift and an unsuccessful campaign for governor pleaded guilty Wednesday and will serve eight years in prison.

Linda Schrenko, 56, struck a plea bargain in the middle of her trial. The trial continued for two alleged accomplices.

Prosecutors said Schrenko stole federal education money to underwrite her 2002 campaign for governor, cosmetic surgery and other extras, including a television, computer and a down payment on a car.

Having spent a lot of time in Georgia schools during Schrenko’s tenure, I can assure you that this wasn’t an extra $600k she pilfered from the landscaping budget.

Freedom on the March

It’s really a sight to behold:

A day after scolding Russia for retreating on democracy, Vice President Cheney flew to oil-rich Kazakhstan yesterday and lavished praise on the autocratic leader of a former Soviet republic where opposition parties have been banned, newspapers shut down and advocacy groups intimidated.

BNP: 11 Seats?!?

When Labour loses 11 of 13 seats contested by the BNP, you know that something is seriously off.   I have no idea if the reshuffling of the cabinet will do anything.  Perhaps a bigger move is required.  Frankly, I would have been entirely satisfied to see the Tories and/or the Lib Dems slap Labour around a bit, providing a much needed wake up call to Labour.  But seats to the BNP?  The Rivers of Blood and Keep Britain White BNP?

Gordon Brown, you had better get things sorted.  Quickly.

Resurgence of the BNP

The Washington Post reminds us that the British National Party is still kicking, and I am now reminding you that all right and good people ought to take a stake to its black little heart. And Enoch Powell again, for good measure.

George Allen – A Small Small Man

Virginia is currently cursed with George Allen as one of its senators.  While I often disagree with Sen. John Warner (the Commonwealth’s other senator), he’s a respectable fellow who has given much in service to his state and country.   George Allen, on the other hand?  A sad little man who has had everything handed to him (hmmm, heard that before?), and has managed to trade on his name and charm to get him into the Senate.  Digby summarizes an interesting TNR article on George Allen, illustrating what a horrid little racist he was as a teen (and I don’t think, for a second, that it has faded all that much).  This matters to you because Allen’s going to be a top contender for the 2008 nomination – dumber than a box of rocks with a hateful little edge to him – just how the GOP likes their nominees, of late.

Dear Leader

I just may have changed my position on the immigration issue – clearly, we are letting too many North Korean speech writers into this country. Think Progress shares this gem from the Easter Egg Roll at the White House:

Today at the White House Easter Egg Roll, dozens of children “from the stricken Gulf Coast region serenaded First Lady Laura Bush with a song praising the beleaguered Federal Emergency Management Agency.” To the tune of “Hey Look Me Over,” the kids from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama sang:

“Our country’s stood beside us
People have sent us aid.
Katrina could not stop us, our hopes will never fade.
Congress, Bush and FEMA
People across our land
Together have come to rebuild us and we join them hand-in-hand!”
